Welcome to Waterton!

The perfect way to experience the Rocky Mountains, this enchanting park, located in Alberta, Canada, is a natural wonder that boasts serene lakes, rugged mountains, and abundant wildlife. Waterton Lakes National Park is located in southern Canada, on the border with the USA and the self-governing territory of the Blackfoot Nation.

History of the area and establishment of the park

In 1895, Waterton Lakes became Canada's fourth national park. It was initially known as a protected area for its unique landscapes and wildlife. In 1932, Waterton Lakes National Park joined forces with Glacier National Park in Montana to become the world's first International Peace Park. This designation promotes cooperation and conservation across borders.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including the Ktunaxa and Blackfoot Nations. Their presence is still felt in the park through cultural heritage sites and traditions.

Highlights of the park

Waterton Lakes

These lakes are what the park is named for! At the heart of the park, you'll find the three stunning Waterton Lakes, which are a chain of pristine, glacier-fed lakes that reflect the towering peaks of the Rockies. The two main lakes, Upper Waterton Lake and Middle Waterton Lake, offer opportunities for boating, kayaking, and simply admiring their crystal-clear waters.

Red Rock Canyon

The vibrant Red Rock Canyon offers a striking contrast to the lush greenery of the park. Its distinctive red rocks are a result of iron oxide deposits in the sedimentary rock layers. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives, picnics, and short hikes around this unique geological feature.

Flora and fauna

In the National Park, Alberta's prairies meet the Rocky Mountains. The result is a fantastic landscape with a mild climate that is home to countless flowers and wild animals. All of North America's native predators live here: wolves, cougars, bears and wolverines can be seen. But moose, wapitis, bison, bighorn sheep and snow goats are also at home here. Around 150 species of birds nest in the park, and 100 more rest on their bird migration.
