A brief history

Named after the indigenous Snuneymuxw First Nations people's word "sneneymuxw," which means "great and mighty people," Nanaimo's history is deeply intertwined with the indigenous cultures that have thrived in the region for thousands of years.

In the mid-19th century, European settlers arrived in Nanaimo, BC, primarily drawn by the coal deposits in the area. The city rapidly grew into a bustling coal mining town, and remnants of this heritage can still be seen in the historic downtown area. Over the years, Nanaimo has evolved into a vibrant community known for its maritime culture, natural beauty, and welcoming atmosphere.
